Getting your puppy used to going to the groomers from a young age is essential so that they can learn to love going to the groomers! We recommend introducing them to grooming 2 weeks after their last vaccinations. Waiting until later in life could mean that grooming becomes a very stressful experience for them.
Home grooming should start earlier than this, including gentle brushing. We also recommend you work towards desensitizing them to having their feet and face area touched/held. This is so that when they are ready to be groomed it will be easier to trim around their paws and face if they are more used to it.
During your puppies first visit with us we take things nice and slow so as to not overwhelm them. All of the sensations they experience in the salon will be heightened as they are in a new and foreign environment, so we will introduce them to this in the most relaxing and fun way possible!
We will bathe them using a sensitive puppy shampoo, towel and gently blow dry them. Once dry we brush them from head to tail with the same tools you should be using at home (slicker brush & comb). If we come across any matting we will cut these out to avoid them spreading. We then see how they react to having clippers brushed over them without actually cutting any hair off of their body. While we are working around the feet and if the puppy is cooperating we will trim their nails if needed. Once we finish the groom, we pop them onto the floor for some play time, cuddles and treats so that they remember the experience as a fun one!
We recommend that your puppy has at least two puppy grooming sessions before experiencing their first full adult groom. Generally, a puppy has its first haircut at around six months old - cutting it any earlier than this can result in damaging the coat. However if your puppy has not been regularly groomed, they may need to be shaved short to get rid of matting.
