Matted dogs that cannot be brushed through will be shaved down short for their own well-being. This may mean you do not achieve your desired style for your pet, but this is the most humane option. In accordance with the Animal Welfare Act, we will not spend more than 15 minutes de-matting. Where possible we will work to de-mat/brush out any hair that could be salvaged but only under the strict condition that it is causing no stress or suffering to your dog. We can shave the matted area whilst keeping other areas longer if this is possible and if this is what you desire. Please note that the length difference may be visible and not as blended as a normal cut but we will do our best to have your dog looking the best they can.
Matt removal is not included in a full groom, additional charges of between £10-20 depending on the severity will apply due to the extra time taken and the wear caused to our tools and equipment.
Severely matted dogs can suffer many conditions, such as hot spots, fungal infections or severe itching. Once the matted coat is removed the skin may be inflamed due to the lack of circulation, we use special medicated/fragrance-free shampoo to help soothe any irritation that may occur during the process. It is possible we may discover potential problems that were covered by the matted hair - we will not be held liable for this.
If your dogs ears are severely matted, bleeding at the tips can occur due to the blood vessels being restricted due to tight matting. Once clipped the pressure is released meaning the blood will run straight to the tips of the ears. We do everything we can to avoid this from happening however unfortunately it is sometimes unavoidable.
Please be aware that due to our clipper blades having to run underneath the matting tight against the dogs skin there is a higher risk of the dog being nicked. We do of course make every effort to avoid this from happening.
Dogs may tend to scratch and rub at their skin post groom as a result of the matt removal. If this becomes excessive or is causing harm we would recommend taking your dog to the vet for a check-up, explaining that they have been shaved short due to excessive matting.
We highly advise brushing your dog at home regularly to avoid matting, we can recommend products suitable for this if needed. If you struggle to maintain your dogs coat between grooms we recommend booking them in with us for a bath and brush out.
We will always put your dogs welfare first and wish for their grooming experience to be as pleasant as possible.
